The USINACTS usability assessment tutorial

Abstract
USINACTS is an ACTS (Advanced Communications Technologies and Services,an EC-supported research program) project, within the horizontal domain(ie a support project), and whose main objective is to improve the usabilityapproach of ACTS usage trials, and to promote the best practice in usability.Within this general objective, there is a more particular objective whichis  to identify, characterise, document and disseminate examples ofsuccessful application of usability principles from ACTS usage trials.

In a previous phase of the project, the requirements and needs of supportof the participants in the ACTS projects were identified. One of the needmost people outlined was methodological support about how to carry outusability tests. As a response to this need, USINACTS is producing a usabilityassessment tutorial, which presents the different methods based upon realcases, either from ACTS projects or from the industry. One particular advantageof this product is that it is being made in HTML, so that it can be consultedin the USINACTS web (http://atwww.hhi.de/usinacts.html),as well as in a CD-ROM, of which a first version is now available.

The USINACTS tutorial provides up-to-date information about the followingissues:

  • What is usability? Definitions and basic concepts of usability.
  • The User-Centred Design Process.
  • Guidelines for choosing the appropriate usability testing method as a functionof the particular objective.
  • Detailed information about the application of each method, including experiments, questionnaires, interviews, heuristic evaluation, observation, performancemeasures and focus groups.
  • Information about data analysis methods, with recommendations about itsapplication in practical settings.
All the information will be supported by cases from ACTS projects or byexamples from the literature, and the structure allows different ways toconsult the material, either to solve particular problems or to learn aboutusability testing methods in a thorough way.

Applying Usability Methods to Concept Development of a Future WirelessCommunication Device – Case in Maypole

Abstract
The development of next generation products is difficult because thedevelopment team needs to define both the product direction and the productrequirements, while there is no clear understanding of who will use theproduct and what are their requirements. There also is new or not-yet-existinghardware and software technology involved, the product features are constantlyevolving and there is no comparable existing product to benchmark against.

Usability methods can be used for defining the product direction andproduct requirements from users’ point of view. Moreover, the user-centredapproach can inspire creative and innovative design of the product conceptby expanding the developers’ understanding of the users’ world.

In this paper we will present a framework for applying usability methodsto the concept development of a future communication device. The frameworkis based on experience gained by the authors in an ESPRIT Long Term Researchproject called Maypole.

Natural Communication and Mobile Communication in Context

Abstract
A comparison of natural communication, fixed telecommunication andmobile telecommunication is outlined in this report.  The comparisonis informed from field studies, where natural, fixed and mobile communicationis studied in context. Our believe is that by investigating and understandingthe use of different types of traditional and new communication media,we are better suited to develop improved telecommunication services.
